When you go to the beach, you might see tall poles with coloured flags flying. These flags are put up by lifeguards to help everyone stay safe in the sea. The colours of the flags tell you important information about where you can swim, surf, or when you should stay out of the water.

The Red Flag

This means danger. The water is too rough or the current is too strong. It is not safe to swim, surf, or paddle when the red flag is flying.

Red and Yellow Flag

This flag shows the safest place to swim. Lifeguards are watching this area closely. If you want to go in the sea, always swim between these two flags.

Black and White Checkered Flag

This area is for people with surfboards, paddleboards, or bodyboards. It is not safe for swimmers here because boards can move quickly in the waves.
